MSG & Me

I made a big pot of soup last night, out of some beef broth I found in the freezer, that was marked "BBQ".

It tasted really good, but I noticed that while I ate it I shook like I was having a blood sugar problem, and was not filling up, so I ate some more, and some more... then my chest/heart started to hurt/get tight, and generally weak muscles. (arms & legs, but not as bad as my last encounter)

Mom said to not eat any more, and to throw it out. =(

Evidently there was some MSG in the broth. I was fine later in the evening- but today I have 2 of my other symptoms- cranky (but not as emotional as I could be), and acne. =(

All the same, it was so sad to throw it out.

After all that work....and the good veggies & beef....sigh...

This was my 4th MSG episode, the first time I said "that was weird". The 2nd time I said "must be the MSG", and the 3rd time was an accident- I did not read the package before I ate, and that time was the worst reaction.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Needless to say, this is the reason that I don't eat
at Chick-fil-A, Long John Silvers or Chinese buffets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The interesting thing is that I was telling my older brother about this, and he found it very interesting, because he had watched this TV show, called something like "1000 ways to die".

It was about the (more or less)strange things that people die from, and one of the stories was a man that had a heart attach because of a reaction to MSG.

A woman...

My Friend Esther, found the following quote in her
1958
Encyclopedia under 'Woman'.

"A woman plays her most important role as homemaker and mother. The training she gives her children is vital to the growth of the individual, the community, and the nation."

I think that this is a true statement! What do you think? =)

My friend's Gluten-Free Pizza

Stormy's Yummy GF Pizza!
Stormy says: "OK, here's how we put our GF Pizza's together. We used Hogsdon Mill Piizza Crust (http://www.hodgsonmill.com/roi/673/Gluten-Free-Products/Gluten-Free-Pizza-Crust-Mix-71518-02115.htm) which turned out really fabulous.

We also used Boboli pizza sauce.
The taste... was really good, but I wouldn't recommend it because we noticed it had High Fructose Cornsyrup in it.

My hubby only put cheese and pepperoni on his, but I also added olives, garlic, onilons, and sundried tomatoes from Kroger's olive bar.

I guess by using a crust mix, it's not considered totally homemade. I've made puddings completely homemade and they were stringy, so I'm too chicken to try anything else

Diary-Free Oatmeal Cookie recipe, made for the O'family

I told Dad that these would not be normal Oatmeal Cookies, because I was making them for the "so-and-so" boys, and they can't have dairy. And he said that the chocolate was funny, but the cookie part was good. I think that that is praise(!) because he loves Oatmeal Cookies, and is kind of picky about them. =) Now to see what Mom says...

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 3/4 cup shortening (I used a little more than 1/2 c. Coconut oil)
  • 1 cup white sugar (I used 3/4c)
  • (I added 1/2tea Vanilla)

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup mashed bananas
  • 1 3/4 cups quick cooking oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (I used chocolate chips instead)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon.
  3. Cream together the shortening and sugar; beat until light and fluffy. Add egg, banana, oatmeal and nuts. Mix well.
  4. Add dry ingredients, mix well and drop by the teaspoon on ungreased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 10-11 minutes or until edges turn lightly brown. Cool on wire rack. Store in a closed container.
My note: They don't spread out- I think that if I made these again I would pat them on the head.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Banana-Oatmeal-Cookie/Detail.aspx

These are a few of the comments that I found helpful, but did not necessarily try:

~Mom said: If you put chocolate chips in, then you should leave out the nutmeg.

~Substituted half of the white sugar with brown sugar...added one tsp of vanilla, added lots of fresh blueberries!

~These cookies are amazing!!!! I divided the dough into 3 parts and baked one part just as the recipe states, added walnuts to one part, and mini chocolate chips to the other part. YUMMY!!!!

~The first time I omitted the nuts, added a bit more cinnamon, they turned out great, they stay soft forever. The second time I added dried cranberries and everyone at work loved them!

~I used ww flour. Instead of white sugar, I used a 1/2 cup of succanant with honey and 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Also used 1/2 cup of butter instead of the shortening. Great.

~Love these cookies. I always add chocolate chips to get a fix for my chocolate craze.

(Good to know) ~These are fantastic. I used to beg my grandma to make these same exact cookies when I was little. We always made them with chocolate chips. On an interesting note, my grandmother told me that she found this recipe in the newspaper during WWII. It was a good recipe to send to the troops because it shipped well and did not use rationed goods.

~Happy eating!

Bahamas or Bust!

The Flamingos, who had lived quite happily in the garden all summer long,
decided that they had to move south.

And move south fast....

...once at the road, they decided to try to hitch a ride...
I wonder how they will make out......

(The snow was too fluffy to make a snowman, so I did this instead.)

Do you like to try new things to drink?

I came across this recipe, or at least this general recipe last week.

~Clove tea:
2tea powdered Cloves in a quart of boiling water simmer 15 minutes.
Strain, and add another quart of water.
To drink: dilute 1 cup of concentrate with 3 cups of water and sweeten. (I used stevia.)
Store in fridge.

FYI: I thought that it was better cold than hot.

This site has a list of things that clove tea is good for:

This site has a list of other things that you can do with Clove tea:

I know that I have written this recipe in a most confusing manner, but that is what you get for not following a tried and true recipe, and just striking out on your own. =]
