Chapter 4- "Character Building" & A Giveaway!

"Beautiful Girlhood" is not just for little girls. It's for big girls & ladies too!
The bit below I read during Church today, from the book "Beautiful Girlhood" Revised by Karen Andreola
Enter to win your own copy at the bottom of this post!!!
(or you can buy it from CBD here or Amazon here)...Mom read this book to me when I was very small, and I am now rereading it for the 2nd time.  I don't sit down and guzzle it...I just read a part of a chapter every week or so. I think that it's good for me.  I also think that every family should own one or more copies.

"....She who has an ideal character is first of all pure and true, them earnest and sincere, patient and gentle, and more ready to serve than to be served. It is easier to build bad than good character....Choose well as the days go by. Build for all time, not just for present pleasure.  What you are building will bring you praise and satisfaction all your life, or it will be your curse and disgrace....
"Is it right?"  "Would it be for my good?"  "Does it meet the approval of my parents?"  "Is it glorifying to God?"  are questions which you should be continually asking yourself as you decide what to do and what to leave undone....Christ is our Perfect Pattern, and only those who form their lives after Him are building the best character...."

James 3:5-13
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.  For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:  But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.  Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.  Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.  Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?  Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.  Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

Wax Lips

Question: Do you have a Wax Lips Memory?

My very early (& only) memory of Wax Lips involves my Aunt Stefie....I don't remember if she brought them with her when she came to visit, or if we already had them, but I remember some red ones and a yellow pair, too and that there were not enough to go around, so we had to take turns, and she & Mom had great fun kissing us...I remember my Aunt tipping my brothers backwards! (I also remember NOT liking the taste of the wax lips!!!)

...I could swear that there were photos taken, but I can't find them! =(

Telephones have come a long way, baby!

(embedded videos today!)

Dialing Tips circa 1950 (American Telephone & Telegraph - Bell System):
(Yes, this video is a little long, but you don't have to watch the whole thing to have fun and get the point!)

I really like the pretty colors that some phones came in- why is it that black or white is pretty much all you can find these days?

Which one do you want?  I'd like the "Belle of the Wall" ~ in Red or Peacock!

New Dish Towels

I had bought a lot of white dish towels (the "flour sack" kind at Attwood's- they used to have the best deal around...I guess that they still do), for a "Dish Towel Bridal Shower" that did not happen...sad sigh!
And so they sat...a while...till Mom commented last week that we needed to keep an eye out for some new dish towels (she was not thinking of me doing any up for her).

While she & Dad were out of town over the weekend, I prettied up two of them for her/us!

They are being modeled by the gifts that my folks brought back for me (aren't they lovely!), they found a FIESTA store in downtown Canton, Texas that sold "seconds"! =)

FYI: the Royal Blue rick-rack is about 5" from the edge....if you want the particulars on the Yellow & Turquoise, just ask, and I'll try to get them for you!
(To see the first two towels I ever made~ click here!)

Happy Dish Towel~ looks more like me than Mom! =)

Bedskirt into House & Town skirt

First you wander around the Commerce Goodwill (they tend to have neat things because it's a "College Town" (TAMU) ) and you look over at the bedding, and as you saunter by, you see a denim twin size Bedskirt, for just a few dollars! Then buy it quick, wash it and make a nice skirt out of it!  =)  There was a lot of fabric left over, too!

I love to add the original tag back to new item I sewed- more fun that way! (And the washing instructions are on it too!)

This is the same skirt that I made for Mom in my Invisible Zipper post (here), but this time I just used a Regular Zipper (here).   It's a  Butterick "fast & easy" #3134 view C (lengthened, and a Bias tape waist (here) instead of the real waistband it called for)

(Sorry, the wind was making it really hard to photograph.)

Remember the movie "Up"? I've only watched it once but I really love the song Married Life. (here)
