My First and Second Shoofly Pies

 Word of warning: if you don't like molasses, just skip this post.

The Shoofly Pie is a Molasses Pie. No one warns you of this tasty fact.

"likely that the pie is named after a famed 19th century circus animal called Shoofly the Boxing Mule"

First Pie: I picked Taste of Home's recipe for a "wet bottom" Shoofly Pie (doesn't that sound great?!)...for no particular reason...they just made it sound fun...

https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/shoofly-pie/

This version (although I may have overcooked it) was not exactly wet bottomed....it was reminiscent a moist molasses muffin baked in a pie shell (thanks, Aldi!)...I enjoyed it with a cup of coffee.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Second Pie: We tried the recipe in "The Joy of Cooking"... As it sat on your plate, it began to weep....not uncontrollably,  as if it had a sad past and was trying to be brave and suffer in silence...
In general, I would say it was the better pie, although I would make either one depending on the occasion.  Right after I made this recipe, I found a list online of recipe variations/tweaking like adding ginger & spice to make it more a Gingerbread in a pie crust!  Sadly, while I copied notes, I can't find where I saved them now...or maybe I accidentally deleted the screenshot.....hmmm...
And this picture was just fun...so why not include it?! =)
Thank you Shelley!
  (I like it- it's like "Bobby's Girl"! Poor Grandma Hale- one visit from little Bobby, would have me humming ALL night long!)
Get this fun fact: both songs came out in 1962!
Musical Monday: Peter, Paul & Mary's "If I Had Wings"
"If I Had Wings"
If I had wings no one would ask me should I fly
The bird sings, no one asks why.
I can see in myself wings as I feel them
If you see something else, keep your thoughts to yourself,
I'll fly free then.
Yesterday's eyes see their colors fading away
They see their sun turning to grey
You can't share in a dream, that you don't believe in
If you say that you see and pretend to be me
You won't be then.
How can you ask if I'm happy goin' my way?
You might as well ask a child at play!
There's no need to discuss or understand me
I won't ask of myself to become something else
I'll just be me!
If I had wings no one would ask me should I fly
The bird sings, and no one asks her why.
I can see in myself wings as I feel them
If you see something else, keep your thoughts to yourself,
I'll fly free then.
Sewing Machine ads part 1
I love vintage ads, even the ones that are for products that I would never buy!
That said, I REALLY love the ads that are for things I'd have bought! =)
Musical Monday: Vikki Carr - "It Must Be Him"
 Do you ever feel this way?
That an e-mail, text or call just must be from a certain friend (current or long lost) or a relative?
 I confess, I sometimes (not very often) feel this way.
Or is it a way of life- a childish way of thinking?  Feeling that things just must be our way?  Not trusting God, wanting things to go or be a certain way?  Think about the Israelites begging for a King.   (1 Samuel 8)
I confess, I sometimes (very often) feel this way.
I'd really like to know why.
Some fun trivia:
"It Must Be Him" is a popular song originally with French lyrics (title: "Seul Sur Son Étoile").
New English lyrics (and a new English title) were written, and the song was published in 1967. The best-selling version of the song was recorded that year by Vikki Carr, which reached number three on the U.S. pop chart and spent three weeks at number one on the easy listening chart. The single peaked at number two in the United Kingdom, spent three weeks at number one in Australia and went to number thirteen in Ireland. Carr went on to record it in Spanish and Italian, as well.
(embedded below or listen to it HERE.)
"....That's when the phone rings, and once again I start to pray - Let it please be him, oh dear God It must be him , it must be him or I shall die, Or I shall die... Oh hello, hello my dear God It must be him but it's not him And then I die That's when I die..."
Musical Monday: Dean Martin "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You"
This song has such a nice sound~ great arrangement!   I first learned of this Dean Martin gem in the movie "How to Fall in Love"...but I forgot to look it up till I re-watched it on Saturday night.  I stopped the movie, and looked it up right away- taking the time to listen to it twice!  =)
"You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You" was written and published in 1944....It is best known in versions by Dean Martin, who recorded it in 1964.
Dean Martin's version spent 9 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 25
 Click HERE to see the list of artists that also recorded it~ it's a long list including Peggy Lee.
